What Is Diatomite? Material Properties, Uses and What Buyers Should Know
규조토란 무엇인가?
Diatomite is a naturally porous sedimentary rock formed primarily from the fossilized remains of microscopic aquatic organisms called diatoms. It is composed mainly of amorphous silica, which gives it a rigid, highly porous structure that absorbs and releases moisture quickly.
정의
Diatomite (also called diatomaceous earth, or DE) is a soft, lightweight sedimentary rock formed from the accumulated silica-rich remains of diatoms in ancient lake and marine deposits. Its defining characteristic is porosity: the material is full of microscopic voids that create a large internal surface area.
How Diatomite Forms
Diatoms are single-celled algae that build microscopic shells of amorphous silica. Over millions of years, massive colonies of diatoms settled on the floors of lakes and oceans. Those layered deposits compacted into sedimentary rock, preserving the porous shell structure. Today these deposits are mined, crushed, milled, and screened into powders or pressed into rigid products. (See USGS reference below for geological and industrial background.)
Key Properties (and What Is Verified)
| 속성 | Description | |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Primarily amorphous silica; Sheenyoo’s sourced diatomite contains SiO2 at or above 60% | |
| 규조토 함량 | Finished Sheenyoo material tests at 85%+ diatomite content | |
| Structure | Rigid, highly porous structure with a large internal surface area | |
| Water handling | Draws surface moisture into its pores and releases it through evaporation | |
| 흡수 속도 | Absorbs surface water quickly; surface dries to the touch rapidly |
Diatomite vs. Diatomaceous Earth
“Diatomite” and “diatomaceous earth” refer to the same geological material, but commercial DE products can differ substantially in processing, grade, and intended use. Loose DE powder should therefore not be treated as equivalent to a cured rigid mat. See the safety discussion for rigid mats vs. loose powder.
What Diatomite Is Used For
Industrial applications
- 여과 — diatomite has been used as a filter medium for beverages and water treatment for over a century.
- Absorbents — spill absorbents and moisture-control products.
- 건설 — lightweight aggregate and insulating materials.
- Agriculture — soil conditioners and carriers.
Home and bath products
Pressed into rigid forms, diatomite becomes the fast-drying products found in bathrooms and kitchens. Sheenyoo manufactures diatomite bath mats, dish drying mats, faucet splash mats, pet feeding mats, coasters, soap dishes, and plant saucers from this material. Each product family uses the same porous structure with different shapes and thicknesses for its setting. See the full product range made from diatomite.
What Diatomite Does Not Do
Clarity about limits is part of an honest material description:
- It does not kill bacteria. Diatomite removes moisture mechanically; it is not inherently antimicrobial. More on what diatomite actually does (and doesn’t) for bacteria.
- It is not permanently mold-proof. Because it dries quickly, it resists mold under normal care, but no surface is mold-proof in standing water.
- It is brittle. Pressed diatomite can chip or crack if dropped or struck.
- Drying slows in humid conditions. The material still absorbs, but moisture release depends on airflow and humidity.
- Sanding creates dust. Sanding any mineral-based surface can generate fine dust; use appropriate dust-control measures, work in a well-ventilated area, and avoid breathing the dust.
Why Diatomite Matters for Buyers
For procurement professionals, the practical question is what diatomite products deliver rapid moisture handling and simple wipe-and-rinse maintenance, with service life depending on use, impact and maintenance. The material performs these functions through structure, not chemistry — which is why claims about it should stay structural. When evaluating suppliers, ask for material specifications (SiO2 content and diatomite content with test documentation) rather than marketing numbers.
